Murdoch Mysteries, Season 5 on Blu-Ray & DVD

Combining the period appeal of Sherlock Holmes with the forensic fascination of CSI, Murdoch Mysteries, Season 5, debuts on Blu-ray and DVD from Acorn on March 5, 2013. Based on the characters from award-winning author Maureen Jennings’ Detective Murdoch novels, the acclaimed Canadian series has garnered 25 Gemini® nominations to its credit, including Best Writing and Best Dramatic Series. Set in Victorian-era Toronto, this smart, engaging series follows Yannick Bisson (Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye) as the brilliant Detective William Murdoch, a pioneer of crime-solving technologies. Distributed by ITV Studios and available to U.S. audiences for the first time, the DVD 4-disc boxed set and Blu-ray 3-disc set include all 13 episodes from Season 5, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more ($59.99 each, AcornOnline.com). A sixth season has already been produced. Acorn is simultaneously releasing a value-priced collection of the previous seasons on DVD and Blu-ray in a Murdoch Mysteries Collection: Seasons 1-4 ($149.99 each).

Still reeling from a personal and professional crisis, Murdoch has taken up gold prospecting at the start of Season 5. Soon he’s back in detective mode, helping a woman accused of murder; investigating an Egyptian curse; experimenting with time travel; and crossing paths with Jack London, Henry Ford, and his idol, Alexander Graham Bell. Meanwhile, Dr. Ogden (Gemini® winner Hélène Joy, Durham County) hires a feisty new coroner, Dr. Emily Grace (Georgina Reilly, The L.A. Complex), who catches the eye of Constable Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching & Dispatching).

Season 5 guest stars include Aaron Ashmore (Smallville), Matthew Bennett (Battlestar Galactica), Peter Keleghan (The Red Green Show), Lisa Faulker (Murder in Suburbia), and opera star Measha Brueggergosman.

Season 5 aired in Canada on CityTV in 2012 but has not aired in the U.S.

Our Thoughts: I had never seen Murdoch Mysteries before I received this set to review, but I think that its now one of my favorite crime based shows. I love period drama, and I love learning about criminal investigations. This show combines both in an early 1890' setting. You'll learn how forensics excerpts solved the cases before they had the help of computers. Each episode brings you each of the seat drama and mystery. The cast of characters are funny, interesting and diverse. I especially love the female pathologist who is making her way in a man's world. While the main characters are fictional, along they way, they cross paths with some famous figures from history and some across some supernatural possibilities like Egyptian mummies and time traveling . This series is definitely a refreshing switch from the norm, and I'm looking forward to getting the other seasons.

If you want to get the advantage of a full set of amazing old world  stories, than this is the box set for your. You can order Murdoch Mysteries Season 5 on both DVD and Blu-Ray on Acorn Media. Seasons 1-4 are also available.
