Vera, Set 2 DVD Review

Returning to record ratings in the U.K. in 2012, the second series of the acclaimed British mystery series, Vera, Set 2, makes its U.S. debut on DVD from Acorn Media on November 6, 2012. Based on the award-winning novels by Ann Cleeves, the ITV series stars two-time Oscar® nominee Brenda Blethyn (Little Voice, Secrets & Lies, Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) as Vera Stanhope—a brilliant police detective with a disheveled exterior, a sharp tongue, and an uncanny ability to solve crimes. In these four new feature-length dramas, Stanhope delves into a world of shadows and suppressed passions where everyone has something to hide (DVD 4-disc set, $59.99, AcornOnline.com). The first series of Vera currently airs on select public television stations, however, the DVD release of Set 2 marks the first time the second series is available to U.S. audiences.

Tough, dedicated, and more than a little irreverent, DCI Stanhope is assisted by her long-suffering sergeant, Joe Ashworth (David Leon, RocknRolla); DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison, High Times); and forensic pathologist Billy Cartwright (Paul Ritter, The Eagle). Guest stars include Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Julie Graham (Bonekickers), Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), and Judy Parfitt (Girl with a Pearl Earring).

Episodes: The Ghost Position, Silent Voices, Sandancers, A Certain Samaritan

Our Thoughts: I had never seen Vera before I received this set to review, but I think that its now one of my favorite crime based shows. I love learning about criminal investigations, and I love strong female characters. This show combines both in a classic British setting. You'll follow the witty, sharp tongued Vera as she outdoes her make colleagues and you'll definitely be routing her on. Each episode leaves you on the edge of the seat  because it is filled with drama and mystery. The cast of characters are funny, interesting and diverse. Even if you didn't catch the first season, each episode can stand on its own you can enjoy the series back to back or start off on the second season like I did without any confusion. This series is definitely a refreshing switch from the norm, and I'm looking forward to getting the other seasons. The series is based on the best-selling series by Ann Cleves, and I am definitely going to be looking for those books at the library.

If you want to get the advantage of a full set of amazing mysteries, than this is the box set for your. You can order Vera, Set 2 for only $59.99 at Acorn Media.
