The Pathbreaker by Emma Kathryn

To some, Hannah Jones has it all. After all, she acts on the hottest tv show in the country. She gets to rub shoulders with the nation's biggest stars. She seems to lead a life of glamour and riches.
But few know the truth. Hannah, an underpaid casual actress, could lose her job at any moment. Furthermore, she is guarding a shameful secret. Autistic, Hannah has suffered years of unemployment. Acting is not only her dream job. It is also the only job she can do.

My Thoughts

The Pathbreaker is an exciting novel that centers around a women named Hannah Jones. She's a struggling actress and author trying to break out in her industry. While she has a steady income from her role as an extra in a popular soap opera, she lives with the constant fear of what will happen if the series ends. Although romance isn't her top priority, Christopher, a friend from her local theater becomes her champion after she is brutally attacked. Hannah isn't sure who to trust, but she has to figure out why she's being targeted before it's too late.

In addition to being an exiting thriller with a healthy side of romance, this novel also gives readers up close and personal look at living life with high functioning autism. Hannah is diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome and this leads to struggles with finding a job that's right for her. All these different elements converge to make this novel impossible to put down.

He Was My Person - Losing Someone to Addiction #RememberMyPerson

For years, everyone has been telling me to watch Glee. At least a dozen people left reviews of my Dark Musicals series citing the similarities. I usually prefer reading to television, but I finally gave in. Yes, all the fun musical antics are delightful, but it wasn't the music that made an impact on me. Like the star of Glee, Lea Michele, I lost a man I loved  to addiction. Tonight, I watched the episode of Glee where the cast honored their fallen costar Cory Monteith. The entire show was emotional, but one of Lea's lines touched me more deeply than I can ever explain. Four simple words.

"He was my person."

Ever since he died, I've struggled with how to express my feelings about his loss and how it impacted me. Sometimes I wasn't even sure I was entitled to grieve for him. We were divorced. We both had other relationships. Even though we almost got back together a dozen times, even though he called me two days before he died swearing I was the only woman he ever loved, I can't call him my husband. Yet, he was so much more than an ex. He was my first love, father of my children, sometimes my lover, but always my friend.

He was my person. No other labels required.

Though the good and the bad -- and there was a lot of both -- he was my person. He was the person who sang Uptown Girl (badly) to get me to go out with him. He was the person who maxed out our credit card buying canned goods during Y2K. He was the person who held my hand when our children came into the world. He was the person who explored the deepest parts of my soul and still loved me.  He was the person who broke my heart a thousand times, but he was also the person who gave me twelve years of perfect happiness. He was the person who fought so hard, but who inevitably lost his battle with addiction.

Our world can be such a harsh and judgmental place. People often look down on those who lose their lives to addiction. For this reason, I recently published a novel called Waiting to Fly. This story is fiction.  As with all my work, there are always pieces of me in my characters, but the story line is enhanced for entertainment purposes. However, the emotion in this story is real -- the guilt, the anger, the grief, but most importantly, the love -- it's all real. I wrote this book because I want a piece of my person to live on. I want to share my person. I don't want my person to be forgotten.

When I released Waiting to Fly, I never intended to share that it was personal for me.  But fictionalized or not, this story is as personal as it gets. This book may never be a best seller, and it wasn't an easy tale to spin, but it was a story that needed to be told.  For those who lost someone to this terrible disease, I want you to know that you aren't alone.  For everyone else, I want you to understand our loved ones were more than their addiction. Everyone who dies from an overdose is someone's person, and those of us who are left behind have to face a lifetime without them.

THE GLASS CASTLE – Starring Brie Larson and Woody Harrelson

Based on the best-selling memoir written by Jeannette Walls, Oscar® winner Brie Larson (2015, Best Actress, Room) and Oscar® Nominee Woody Harrelson (2009, Best Supporting Actor,The Messenger) star in The Glass Castle, arriving on Digital HD October 24 and Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD), DVD and On Demand November 7 from Lionsgate. Hailed as “one of the must-see movies of 2017” (Vanity Fair), The Glass Castle chronicles the adventures of a young girl growing up in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads. From the producer of The Shack and The Blind Side, the film also stars Oscar® Nominee Naomi Watts (2012, Best Actress, The Impossible) and Golden Globe® Nominee Max Greenfield (2013, Best Supporting Actor – Television, “New Girl”).

Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family, The Glass Castle is a remarkable story of unconditional love. • A Conversation with Jeannette Walls
  • Making of "Summer Storm" by Joel P West
  • Scoring The Glass Castle

My Thoughts

The Glass House is the movie adaption of the best-selling memoir by Jeannette Walls. It takes us through her life with her nontraditional parents. Her mother is an artist and her father is an alcoholic who can't hold a job. The family moves from place to place, and often squats in deserted houses. At times her eccentric father is fun and amazing, at other times, he is cruel and angry.  The children often go hungry, and Jeanette is even injured and scarred because of her parent's neglect. Throughout the trials of their life, the siblings in the family stick together and eventually move away. Jeanette finds herself living the exact opposite life her family lived. But a life of entitlement doesn't seem as wonderful as it once did, and Jeannette struggles to find s happy medium between the world of the rich and the uncertain world her parents raised her in.

This was an amazing, touching film. It really paints a picture of the constant struggle of living with an alcoholic. You feel the turmoil of loving the person, but knowing you need to walk away. In the end, Jeannette learns to embrace the best parts of her father and uses that as an inspiration in her work. I really enjoyed this film and the lessons that it teaches. I think it's destined to be a classic that will be enjoyed by countless generations to come.

Wentworth, Season 3 DVD

Critically-acclaimed Australian prison drama Wentworth, Season 3 makes its DVD debut on June 6, 2017 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. Fans of the iconic Prisoner series, which pushed boundaries over three decades ago and still boasts a loyal following worldwide today, will remember Bea Smith as gutsy and fearless, ruling Wentworth Correctional Centre with an iron fist. Wentworth, Season 3 stars Danielle Cormack (Xena: Warrior Princess, Deep Water, Rake) as Bea Smith. The 4-Disc set features 12 episodes, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes (44 min.) and a photo gallery ($59.99, AcornOnline.com).Wentworth, Season 3 premiered on Soho in Australia in 2015.

The women of Wentworth Prison face a high-stakes power struggle in Season 3 of the internationally acclaimed Australian drama. After receiving a life sentence without parole, Bea Smith (Cormack) assumes the mantle of top dog and asserts her dominance over the other inmates, including Franky Doyle (Nicola da SilvaRush), who finds herself more vulnerable than ever before. Enlisting the help of both prisoners and officers, Bea wages war with sadistic governor Joan “The Freak” Ferguson (Pamela RabeThe Secret Life of Us) but does not anticipate the collateral damage her schemes may cause.

This award-winning drama boasts “tense direction, sleek editing, and punchy writing… [with] extraordinary acting performances” (The Globe and Mail, Canada). The fantastic ensemble cast also includes Kate Atkinson (Jack Irish), Robbie Magasiva (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Socratis Otto (The Diplomat), and Aaron Jeffrey (McLeod’s Daughters).

BONUS: Behind-the-scenes featurettes (44 min.) and a photo gallery

Street Date: June 6, 2017                                 SRP: $59.99
DVD 4-Disc Set: 12 episodes, plus bonus – Approx. 580 min. – SDH Subtitles – UPC 054961253890
Contains violence, strong language, sexual situations, nudity, and drug use.

My Thoughts

In Wentworth, Bea Smith is a women pushed to the edge. When she kills her abusive husband, she finds herself in prison with some pretty tough women. Refusing to let anyone ever hurt her again, this former house wife and mother becomes one of the top dogs at the prison. Season three is broken down into twelve exiting episodes.

The Governor's Pleasure  - Bea gets a lifetime sentence and the governor is out to get her.

Failing Upwards - Liz has family trouble and alliances are breaking down in the prison.

Knives Out - The knives might come out when several inmates aren't getting along. A guard is also causing some trouble.

Righteous Acts- Someone is out for revenge. Liz's family issues continue, and a guard is suspected of wrong doing.

Mercy - Bea plans to take down Ferguson and agrees to visit Kaz Proctor to try to stop some of the violence.

Evidence - Jodie's accusations of abuse causes problems for the Governor, but after Bea is kidnapped Jodie's story crumbles.
The Long Game - Bea learns she was drugged, and smuggles DNA samples out. Franky makes a shocking confession.

Goldfish - Doreen goes into labor while helping Bea with Ferguson.

Freak Show - Ferguson is still dealing with Jodie's accusations and has Bridget removed. Doreen is in for hard times with her newborn and Bea gets a surprising helping hand from Fletch.

A Higher Court - Franky is up for parole. Her former lover plants drugs in her cell, but she has a plan.

The Living and the Dead - Ferguson ends her mentorship of Vera thanks to Bea, but knowing that Ferguson is crazy she hopes to take her place.

Blood & Fire - Fetch and Vera gang up on Ferguson. Franky prepares for release, and Bea thinks she's solved Harry's murder.

This is a great series about an issue that is very realistic. We hear too often about women who are victims of domestic violence who go to prison when they finally fight back. I look forward to seeing what happens as this series progresses, and I do hope that eventually Bea gets out of prison. Though I never saw the original series in the 80s, I definitely enjoyed this one.  As a huge Xena fan, I was also exited to see Danielle Cormack back on the small screen. If you'd like to check out this fantastic series, you can find it online at Acorn Media or on Amazon.

DVD Review : Wentworth, Season 1

Critically acclaimed Aussie prison drama Wentworth, Season 1 makes its DVD debut on November 15, 2016 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. Offering a contemporary reimagining of the Prisoner series, Wentworth stars Danielle Cormack (Xena: Warrior Princess, Shortland Street) as Bea Smith, and co-stars Kate Atkinson (SeaChange, Offspring), Celia Ireland (All Saints), Shareena Clanton (Stone Bros.), Robbie Magasiva (Shortland Street) and Katrina Milosevic (Neighbours, Stingers). At its heart, the character driven drama series is about survival with women living in a pressure cooker environment. Who was Bea Smith before prison? How did a wife and mother from the suburbs become a top dog without rival? Wentworth is a dynamic, often confronting drama series that begins with Bea’s early days in prison. Set in the present day, it is a modern adaptation of Prisoner that contemporizes legendary characters and their stories for today’s audience. This ten-part first season takes the viewer inside to an uncompromising environment that explores the politics of women in a world without men, and how such a threatening experience both challenges and often changes those confined and working behind the razor wire.

DVD Review: Clean Break, Season 1

“Gorgeously cinematic crime drama.” — The New York Times

“Incredibly compelling Irish thriller.” — Boston Herald

The thrilling, atmospheric four-part crime drama explores just how far desperation and greed will drive the residents of one small Irish town. Adam Fergus (Being Erica) stars as a car dealer whose life is falling apart around him. Before he loses everything, he devises a reckless kidnapping plan to fix his money problems while also getting revenge on the people making his life miserable. Written by award-winning writer Billy Roche (The Eclipse), Clean Break co-stars Aidan McArdle (Mr. Selfridge, Ella Enchanted), Damien Molony (Being Human, Suspects), Sean McGinley (Republic of Doyle), and Ned Dennehy (Dominion Creek) (DVD 2-disc set, $39.99). Premiered and available on Acorn TV.

My Thoughts

This exciting new drama series centers around Frank Mallon. He's a car dealer whose wife walked out on him and whose business is floundering. He comes up with a plan that will get out of financial debt, but it leads to more trouble than he expected. This first season includes four episodes.

1- His wife walks out, his daughter is a teen gone wild, and his business is in jeopardy. He comes up with an illegal plan, but when a child is kidnapped, it interferes with his big idea.

2- The kidnappers might get away with it, and everyone is town is turning against each other.

3- Several people are out to get Danny, and may have found his hideout. Thing gets pretty scary in this one.

4-  Things start to get pretty dangerous and lives are on the line. Can Danny make it out and still get away with his plan?

This is a fast-paced show with great actors, set in Ireland. There is plenty of action, and the acting is excellent.  It's a great action to the Acorn family.  I really hope it gets picked up for a second season. If you'd like to order a copy of this fantastic new series for yourself, it is available online at Acorn Media and on Amazon.

DVD Review : JANET KING, Series 1: The Enemy Within

JANET KING, Series 1: The Enemy Within (DVD Debut) - “Acorn’s superior legal drama” (TV Guide) and “Marta Dusseldorp is effortlessly cool as Janet King, a fully developed female character that we don’t see often enough on our screens.” (The Hoopla) - Beloved Australian actress Marta Dusseldorp (A Place to Call Home, Jack Irish) stars in this gripping, new legal drama as a senior crown prosecutor. Determined to prove she still has her edge, Janet returns from maternity leave to find her workplace even more demanding than when she left. She quickly becomes involved in a high-profile and controversial case, making several enemies throughout her search for the truth - enemies that will threaten her career, family, and ultimately her life. Premiered on Acorn TV.

My Thoughts

This series centers around Janet King. She is a senior crown prosecutor in Australia. We follow her through a variety of high profile cases. Though she is often threatened both privately and professional, she always holds her ground. The series includes eight fantastic episodes.

A Song of Experience- Janet's first case after returning from maternity leave involves a police commissioner named Blakely who assisted his wife in an easy death when she was terminal. But was that really what she wanted?

Every Contact Leaves a Trace - A biker is accused of murder despite minimal proof. Janet is forced to spend a lot of time away from her family.

Natural Justice - The Moreno case intertwines with the Blakely case, and Diane is starting to crack.

The Third Man - Danny Novak is seen with Blakely on the day he goes missing. Lina attends compulsory psychological counseling.

5. Lurking Doubt - Janet and Erin are accused of having an affair.  The Moreno case trial judge is brought in. Ash and the kids leave down after being threatened.

6. Overtime- Jane believes Moreno is involved in Blakely's murder.  She questions his daughter to gain more information. Lina wants to resign.  Ash and the kids are still in hiding.

7. An Achilles Heal-  Another body is found linked to the Blakely. The crown attorneys want Maya to testify against Nelson again.

8.The Greatest Good - Blakely's son reveals startling new information. Danny Novak is arrested. A new and suspect is located. Janet is frantic to protect her family.

I really loved this series. It centers around a strong female character and is packed with action and intrigue. If you'd like to grab a copy of this awesome DVD for yourself, you can find it online at Acorn Media or on Amazon.

My Thoughts

There's something about a great crime drama that I just can't resist, and 19-2 is now my newest addiction. This series puts you right is the heart of the streets with actual officers working the beat. Nick is struggling with a former shooting and his partner Ben is a rookie cop. Both are a little wary of the other and are just learning to trust each other in the mist of a bizarre and violent rash of crimes that are hitting their city. DVD Review: Dominion Creek

Marking the first Western to be made in Ireland, this new epic, character driven 4-part miniseries starsOwen McDonnell (Single Handed), Seán T.Ó Meallaigh (Charlie, Patrick, Kings), and Dara Devaney (Above Suspicion: Silent Scream, Camelot) as the Connolly brothers; three Irish emigrants seeking riches in the American Gold Rush. The storylines and characters draw from historical accounts and are inspired by real life tales of people who experienced the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890’s. Premiered on Acorn TV in Jan. 2016.

My Thoughts

This is a great mini-series that gives us a look at life on the Yukon during the Gold Rush. The story is told through the eyes of three Irish brothers named Seamus, Padraig, and Tom Connolly. They strike gold on their claim, but money can tear apart even the closest families. They fight among themselves, but quickly learn they will need to stick together to survive.  The series is broken down into four episodes.

1 - In August 1897, the Connolly brothers head to the Yukon to find their fortune using a coded map. They make some friends but also a few enemies (especially the Hopkins) and before too long violence breaks out.

2- In September of 1897,  the tension between the Connollys and the Hopkins reaches a boiling point.  Seamus falls in love with the wrong girl.

3 - We skip ahead to March 1898 - The brothers find gold and start to turn on each other. Meanwhile, Kate has a big secret.

4- The brothers grow further apart, and a big disaster forces Seamus away from his Irish clan.  A thrilling conclusion where not everyone will survive.

This is a excellent series for anyone who is a fan of Westerns! I was really impressed with the costume and backdrops. It had a very realistic feel to it. The cast all did a wonderful job as well. It you want to check out this great historical drama for yourself, be sure to grab a copy on Acorn Media or on Amazon.

DVD Review: And Then There Were None

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (DVD/Blu-ray debut) – "Surely the best Christie adaptation yet made for television" (The Times) and "TV event of the year" (Guardian) - The new BBC and Lifetime adaptation of Agatha Christie’s most successful book features an incredible cast: Aidan Turner (PoldarkThe Hobbit trilogy), Anna Maxwell Martin (Midwinter of the SpiritThe Bletchley Circle), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter films, Sleepy Hollow), Douglas Booth (Great Expectations), Maeve Dermody (Serangoon Road),Burn Gorman (TURN: Washington’s SpiesTorchwood), Toby Stephens (Black SailsJane Eyre), and Noah Taylor (Peaky BlindersGame of Thrones). The story follows a dinner party on an island where the guests start dying one by one. BBC Trailer and arrival on the island.

My Thoughts

And There There Were None is an exciting mystery inspired by the Agatha Christie novel of the same name.  Right before the start of WWII, ten strangers are invited to Soldier Island. They have nothing in common and have no idea who their host it, but before long, it becomes clear there are ominous intentions. The mini-series is broken down into three episodes.

1- Eight people make the journey to Soldier Island. We get a sneak peek into each of their backgrounds and their secrets. Not long after they arrive, someone is murdered. Soon the eight guests, along with the maid and the butler all find themselves suspects.

2- Every one is afraid they might be the next victim and no one knows who to trust. Some try to unearth the murderer and soon other secrets about the guests come to light, making them all look guiltier.  More people are killed.

3- There are only a handful of survivors and they are all terrified of each other. A shocking ending which I've read is true to the original book!

If you're a fan of Agatha Christie, you are going to love this adaption! The exciting mystery is thrilling, and the actors all did a fabulous job. The costumes are true to the time period, and the story-line will keep you on the edge of your seat.  I'm thinking about getting a copy of the book now. My Thoughts

Prisoner's Wives is an exciting crime drama that gives us a look at the women who are left behind when their men are sent to prison. From a young mother whose husband is arrested for murder to the wife of a crime lord, a group of unlikely women form a friendship forged from a combination of hope and despair. There are ten fantastic episodes in this series.

1- Gemma's life falls apart when her husband, Steve, is arrested for murder. At first she believes in him, but the investigation makes things look bad. On visiting day, she meets Francesca, a career criminal's wife and a young drug dealer named Lou.

2- Fran loses her fancy house and has to get a job. We also meet Harriet, a very sheltered mother of one of the inmates.

3- Fran movies in with her dad. Harriet's son gets badly beaten.

4- Gemma becomes a informant. Fran and Paul have some issues.

5- Lou is arrested but makes bail and stays with Harriet. Steve's partner in crime makes bail which makes Gemma nervous.

6- Sean is released and also stays with Harriet. Gavin turns to God. Fran makes a bad decision and Gemma seeks protection.

7- Fran tries to handle Paul's deals, but it's a big disaster. Gang rivalries start to heat up. We meet a new wife, Kim, whose husband is arrested for child abuse.

8- Kim tries to talk to her husband's alleged victims. Fran starts working at a car wash. Harriet and the prison chaplain's relationship blossoms.

9-  Fran's dad has some questions for her and Paul. There is a shocking death at the prison

10- Mick is released but has no where to go. Harriet's turns her away when she visits. Shocking end to Fran's story--no spoilers.

This was a really great series. When everyone calls for punishment, it's easy to forget the people who are left behind and how their hearts will break, not to mention the stigma they have to live with. This was a very well-written series with a strong story line and powerful characters that were very easy to relate to. This is one series I could watch again and again.
