"DINOSAUR TRAIN: DINOSAURS TAKE FLIGHT" on DVD

PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing eight episodes from PBS KIDS’ popularDINOSAUR TRAIN series from The Jim Henson Company on the new DVD “DINOSAURS TAKE FLIGHT.” Join the Pteranodon family on high-flying adventures! In four of the eight episodes on this DVD, viewers take to the sky with Buddy and his family as they ride in one of Dinosaur Train Industry’s newest creations – the Dinosaur Train Zeppelin. As they soar above the clouds, the Pteranodon family visits a waterfall, explores a crater made by an asteroid, and more!

RS TAKE FLIGHT” will be available on DVD June 13, 2017. The DVD running time is approximately 120 minutes and its SRP is $12.99. The episodes included on this DVD are below.  

The five-time Emmy-nominated DINOSAUR TRAIN, created by Craig Bartlett (“Hey Arnold!”), is set in a whimsically realistic, prehistoric world of jungles, swamps, active volcanoes and oceans. Each day, DINOSAUR TRAIN helps kids ages 3 to 6 apply scientific thinking as they discover new types of dinosaur species, compare and contrast dinosaurs to today’s creatures and embrace the living sciences of paleontology and natural science. DINOSAUR TRAIN airs weekdays on PBS KIDS (check local listings).

“Zeppelin: Waterfall”

The Pteranodon kids are riding the Dinosaur Train with friend and fellow pterosaur, Quincy Queztalcoatlus. When they pass by a waterfall, Buddy comments on how big it is!  Quincy’s dad mentions a giant waterfall at the edge of the Western Interior Sea. Mr. Conductor gives a lesson about waterfalls and then suggests a unique and amazing way to view the giant falls – from above! They can fly in the experimental Dinosaur Train Zeppelin…if Thurston Troodon will agree to take them all there on the zeppelin’s maiden voyage. Thurston does and our Pteranodon family gets to experience a spectacular zeppelin ride! The Queztalcoatluses fly alongside, impressing everyone with their flying abilities. After learning more about waterfalls, the Pteranodons catch lots of fish and dine before heading back to the Train via the one-of-a-kind Dinosaur Train Zeppelin!

“Zeppelin: Atoll”

An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef including a coral rim that encircles a lagoon partially or completely. Reef-building corals will thrive only in warm tropical and subtropical waters of oceans and seas, and therefore atolls are only found in the tropics and subtropics. When the Pteranodon family spots Annie and her T. rex herd migrating to follow the food, the Pteranodon kids wonder if other creatures, even marine mammals, also migrate. The Conductor flies the Pteranodon family over the ocean in the Dinosaur Train Zeppelin to look for Polycotylus, a type of marine reptile that does migrate in the ocean. After spotting a pod of migrating Polycotylus from the sky, the Zeppelin lands in an atoll and our family meets Paulette and Polly Polycotylus, a mother and daughter (from what is modern-day Australia). Our Pteranodon kids, and Mom, Dad and the Conductor learn all about Polycotylus migration and the reptile’s features. Then the whole group of new friends enjoys a fish-picnic on the reef of the atoll before the Pteranodon clan heads back home in the zeppelin.

“Zeppelin: Pangaea”

When the Pteranodon kids decide to draw some maps, Don’s map of one big land mass for “the whole Mesozoic” triggers a discussion on whether the Mesozoic is “one big place that’s all connected” or comprised of a bunch of smaller, interconnected land masses. On the Dinosaur Train, the Conductor explains that millions of years ago there actually was just one big land mass called “Pangaea”!  Then, over a long period of time, it started to drift apart and form separate, smaller landmasses, or continents. Our family can’t believe it! The Conductor offers to take the Pteranodons up in the Zeppelin and through a Sky Time Tunnel, back to the time of Pangaea. At the Zeppelin Station, they meet up with Tricia Troodon, who helps pilot the Zeppelin on their journey. Once in the sky and through the time tunnel, our family is able to see Pangaea, the one giant landmass, just as it’s starting to break apart. Then the family travels forward in time and views the continents separating more as oceans and seas move in between the land. Looking down at how their coastline looks in the Cretaceous, Buddy, Tiny, Shiny and Don all agree that seeing Pangaea breaking apart is one of the coolest things ever!

“Zeppelin: Crater”

As the Pteranodon kids are playing outside their nest, a few seedpods fall from a nearby tree, bonking Don on the head. This leads to a discussion about how far away things can fall from…maybe even from space?? Buddy hypothesizes that perhaps if a star came close enough, it could land on Earth! On the Dinosaur Train, the Conductor explains that things actually do fall from space. Big space rocks, called “asteroids,” sometimes land on Earth, and when they occasionally do, they make a big hole, called a crater. Don perks up at this – he’d love to see a crater! So the Conductor takes the Pteranodon Family up in the Zeppelin to see a giant crater from above! On the ground, they explore the crater and find fragments of “space rocks” from the former asteroid. As evening falls and our family flies back home, the Conductor and Mom and Dad surprise the kids with a picnic dinner on the Zeppelin – hurrah!

“Petey the Peteinosaurus”

Buddy and Tiny ride the Dinosaur Train to meet Petey Peteinosaurus, a “flying lizard,” who is fun, funny, and friendly, and has some features similar to both Buddy and Tiny!

“Pterosaur Flying Club”

Tiny and Shiny practice their swoop-de-loops and other flying moves in anticipation of their play-date with fellow Pterosaurs Petey Peteinosaurus and Quincy Quetzalcoatlus. With Buddy helping with the choreography, the Pterosaur Flying Club puts on a flying show!

“The Lost Bird”

Buddy and Tiny ride the Dinosaur Train for a playdate with their old friend Petey Peteinosaurus, and learn that the train has added a new Aviary Car, for their various flying passengers. Suddenly, they are joined by a lost bird named Judy Jehelornis, who was displaced by the recent forest fires, and can’t remember where her home is. Buddy, Tiny, and Petey act as detectives to figure out from clues where Judy’s home is, and the Conductor makes sure she’s brought safely home on the train.

“Don’s Dragonfly”

When the Pteranodon family goes on an outing to the Big Pond, Don makes a new friend with red feet: a dragonfly named Howard.

My Thoughts

My kids have always loved Dinosaur Train. Buddy and the Pteranodon family go off on a variety of exciting adventures on the Dinosaur Train. Along the way, they meet lots of other friends and always discover new things. This DVD includes eight exciting episodes that focus on flying through the air.

My children just loved the selection on this DVD.  This is a great series and this DVD is a great addition to our collection. It has tons of great scenes and we can watch it over and over again.   In addition to lots of action, kids always learn some dinosaur facts in every episode. 

Dinosaur Train: What's At the Center of the Earth?

Good Afternoon, I hope things are well.

PBS Distribution has announced that they will be releasing "Dinosaur Train: What's At the Center of the Earth?" on DVD February 21. The DVD has a run time of 120 minutes and an SRP of $12.99. This DVD contains 8 stories from the beloved PBS KIDS series Dinosaur Train. Below is a listing of the episodes included on the DVD along with a description.

“What’s at the Center of the Earth? Layers!”

The Conductor takes the Pteranodon family on a very special journey on a new invention – the Drill Engine Train – in search of the perfect spot for a new Underground Dinosaur Train Station! Don is THRILLED to be venturing into the BIGGEST HOLE THE EARTH HAS EVER KNOWN! Shiny is nervous to be underground, until they meet a new friend (a Mesozoic Mole named Natasha Necrolestes), who teaches them all about the different layers of the Earth.

“What’s at the Center of the Earth? Fossils!”

As the Pteranodon family continues their journey underground, Don accidentally breaks Buddy’s trilobite fossil (the oldest fossil in his collection)! When the search for another trilobite fossil turns up empty, their new friend Natasha Necrolestes takes them to Fossil Alley, where the kids learn that the older the fossil, the deeper underground it is.

“What’s at the Center of the Earth? Troglobites!”

The Drill Engine Train burrows into an underground limestone cave, where the Pteranodon family meets some strange creatures without eyes called “troglobites.” In a contest to see who would make the best troglobite, Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don participate in a treasure hunt – with their eyes closed! The kids have to rely on their other senses (with some guidance from the actual troglobites) to navigate the cave and find the prize.

“What’s at the Center of the Earth? Minerals!”

While digging even further underground, the drill bit on the Drill Engine Train breaks. The Pterandon family find themselves in the Cave of Giant Crystals, where they learn all about rocks and crystals (what they are, how they’re different, how they form). In order to get back home, the Pteranodon Family has to fix the drill bit by finding a mineral harder than the mineral that broke the bit in the first place.

“Nest Swap”

The Pteranodon family decides to take a little vacation and swap nests with Larry’s friends: a family of pterosaurs (Nemicolopterus, to be exact). But when the Pteranodon family arrives at the Nemicolopterus nest, they realize that the Nemicolopterus family is MUCH smaller than them, so everything is smaller: the Pteranodon family doesn’t even fit in their nest! Can the family make do, try something new, and still have a good time?

“The Herd is the Word”

Tank Triceratops is really excited to show Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don his favorite picnic spot, but when they arrive, the spot is overrun with a whole herd of Triceratops. Tank and the kids try to find another place with a little more privacy (and a lot less Triceratopses), but no matter where they go, the herd follows them. Will Tank be able to find a quiet spot without the herd, or does the herd have a good reason for following Tank around?

“Spinosaurus Super Model”

When Don stumbles across a stick that looks EXACTLY like Old Spinosaurus, he’s determined to have the grumpy old dinosaur pose for his sculpture (so he can get the Spinosaurus’s features exactly right). But when they arrive at Old Spinosaurus’s home, he makes it clear that there’s no way he’s posing for anything. Can Don convince Old Spinosaurus to pose for his sculpture, or will Don have to come up with another plan?

“Where Have All the Lizards Gone?”

The Conductor takes the Pteranodon Family for a special trip to Lizard Island, where they discover that it’s been overrun by plants and bugs, and there are few precious lizards left. The Conductor concludes that the Changyuraptor family (that he dropped off there awhile ago, and has since multiplied) has been eating all the lizards and throwing the entire ecosystem out of balance. Can the Pteranodon family and Mr. Conductor convince the Changyuraptor family to leave their home in order to get the island ecosystem back in balance.

We especially like the one about minerals  since we collect stones and crystals.  In addition to lots of action, kids always learn some dinosaur facts in every episode.

“DINOSAUR TRAIN: BUDDY’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURE”

Join Buddy and his family and friends for some spooktastic adventures! The Pteranodon family visits a haunted roundhouse in Troodon Town where they meet a nocturnal mammal named Vlad Volaticotherium. The fun continues when the family goes to a pumpkin patch and learns about carving pumpkins from Larry Lambeosaurus. The four stories included on this DVD are “Night Train,” “Fossil Fred,” “Haunted Roundhouse,” and “Big Pond Pumpkin Patch.” The SRP for this DVD is $6.99.

NEW DINOSAUR TRAIN DVD UNDER THE VOLCANO

PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing eight stories from PBS KIDS’ popular DINOSAUR TRAIN series from The Jim Henson Company on the new DVD “UNDER THE VOLCANO.” Join Buddy and his family as they watch the mighty volcano, Old Smoky, erupt! In this DVD featuring dino-mite adventures, learn all about lava and geysers, see what happens when Mr. Pteranodon and Larry Lambeosaurus get stuck in a mud pit, and get inspired to make nature art when Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don find ways to use a pile of leaves, petals, wood, and shells from the family nest.

“UNDER THE VOLCANO” will be available on DVD July 12, 2016. The DVD run time is approximately 120 minutes and its SRP is $9.99. The stories included on this DVD are below.  

“Under the Volcano”

Buddy, Tiny, and Dad take the Dinosaur Train to see Old Smoky, the local volcano. It’s such a spectacular sight that they go back for the rest of the family, only to discover they’ve already gone to see the volcano! The merry mix-up concludes as the whole family meets up just in time to catch Old Smoky erupting.

“Old Reliable”

Mr. Pteranodon and Mr. Lambeosaurus take all the kids to see a field of geysers – holes in the ground that hot water shoots out from! At the same time, Mrs. Pteranodon and Mrs. Lambeosaurus are relaxing nearby in soothing pools of warm water, called hot springs. In the end, the kids love seeing the geysers and then joining the Moms in their hot springs, while accidentally surprising Mr. Conductor who is secretly trying to relax in his own private hot spring pool!

“Nature Art”

Mrs. Pteranodon cleans out the clutter from the family nest and the kids are amazed at the pile of stuff – leaves, flower petals, pieces of wood, and shells. Tiny stops Mom from throwing out all the stuff, determined that she and Buddy, Shiny, and Don will find a use for it all. And, they do – the Pteranodon kids have fun making nature art on the beach using the items from the nest!

“The Big Mud Pit”

There’s big trouble at the Big Pond when Larry Lambeosaurus gets stuck in a mud pit, and then Dad tries to get Larry out, and ends up getting stuck himself. Buddy and Leroy Lambeosaurus have to think quickly to pull their dads out before some big meat-eater finds them!

“Derek the Deinonychus”

Buddy, Tiny, and Mom visit a family of Deinonychus dinosaurs with large, sharp toe-claws. They meet a kid named Derek who uses his toe-claws to not only hunt with but to carve great art!

“Triceratops for Lunch”

Our Pteranodon family eats lunch with their friend Tank Triceratops and discovers that he and his family are all plant-eaters, with great leaf-eating teeth and giant appetites!

“The Forest Fire”

When a forest fire comes to woods not far from the family nest at Pteranodon Terrace, the family takes the Dinosaur Train to visit a nearby area where a fire has already been. The Conductor leads the kids on a Nature Tracker hike through the woods to see how new life is growing back – even after the forest fire’s devastation.

“Sunrise, Sunset”

Dad takes the Pteranodon kids on an overnight camping trip where they watch both a sunrise and sunset, learning that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The kids also find out more about nocturnal (night-active) animals, and diurnal (day-active) animals.

Dinosaur Train Meet Dennis in the All-New Episode “Junior Conductors Academy” on Wednesday, April 6 As Part of Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month and The Jim Henson Company is embarking in a brand-new episode “Junior Conductors Academy” in which Buddy and his siblings become friends with a dinosaur who knows a LOT MORE about dinosaurs than Buddy, but has some trouble making friends. Like all dinosaurs, their new friend Dennis Deinocheirus has his own dinosaur features. And, like all of us, he has strengths in some areas and challenges in others.  PBS stations across the country are hosting screenings and events for this special episode and Dinosaur Train has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Learn the Signs. Children's National Dental Health Month: Dinosaur Train Review and #Giveaway

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month – and February 14th is Valentine’s Day. BUDDY and his friends from the PBS KIDS series Dinosaur Train would like to help you celebrate both!!

2. Take your time: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes and be sure to include your tongue!
3. Be kind to your gums: Brush with a soft bristle toothbrush.
4. Get the hard to reach places: Floss your teeth at bedtime.
5. See your Dentist twice a year!

Our Thoughts
My two youngest love Dinosaur Train. My youngest son LOVES his dinos more than anything right now and this is a perfect combination for him! The tooth brush makes brushing his teeth fun and there are no longer fights that come with telling him to brush his teeth. The DVD and the book have made for east bedtime routines with M too. If you have a little one that is into dinos, this pack is for you!

New season of Dinosaur Train: Buddy & The Nature Trackers Book #Giveaway

Get ready for a T-rex sized adventure on January 20, when PBS KIDS premieres “Nature Trackers Adventure Camp,” an all-new, one-hour special from The Jim Henson Company’s hit series DINOSAUR TRAIN. Kids will follow Buddy, Shiny, Tiny and Don in four brand-new, exciting stories as they travel to different ecosystems and learn about erosion, tree lines, rainforests and canyons.  The special premieres Monday, January 20 at 9am and 2:30pm ET/PT (check local listings).  Watch out for repeats on Saturday, January 25 8:30am ET/PT; and Sunday, January 26, 8:00am ET/PT!

In the on-air special, Mr. Conductor and his nephew Gilbert lead Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, Don and friends on an action-packed journey during Nature Trackers Adventure Camp!  Throughout their adventures at camp, the group finds courage as they race down rivers, have a snowball fight, climb a tall mountain, ride a zip line over the rainforest, and hike down a canyon to dig for fossils! DINOSAUR TRAIN “Nature Trackers Adventure Camp” includes the following four stories:

“Nature Trackers Adventure Camp: Rafting”

Buddy, Tiny, Shiny and Don go river rafting for the first time at Nature Tracker Adventure Camp.  Their old pal Jess Hesperornis meets up with them, and they all learn about erosion and the importance of rivers before finishing up their adventure by cruising through some rapids!

Educational Objective: Rivers and streams are ribbons of water that start at some high point and flow downhill – often with streams gathering into rivers. Animals and plants living on land depend on rivers and streams for providing fresh water and nutrients.

“Nature Trackers Adventure Camp: Mountain Climbing”

For their second outing at Nature Trackers Adventure Camp, Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, Don and other friends learn about the tree line as they set out to hike up a mountain.  Shiny is determined to get to the top of mountain forest. Buddy wonders if they'll be able to see anything from the mountaintop, through the tall trees.  The kids are amazed that the higher they hike, the shorter trees and bushes get!  Then they reach the tree line – a certain point on the mountain where trees are really small because they don't have enough air to breathe and the temperature is too cold.  In the end, Shiny and all the kids use teamwork to all reach the mountaintop together!

Educational Objective: The timberline, or tree line, is a certain elevation on a mountain where the temperatures are colder, the air is thin, and the soil is less moist, making it hard for most plants and trees to grow. Trees may grow as small shrubs.  There is less oxygen, so it's harder for animals to breathe at the tree line and above.

"Nature Trackers Adventure Camp: Ziplining”

The Nature Trackers Adventure Campers are back for another adventure -- and this time they'll be travelling to a rainforest!  Once they arrive in the dense rainforest, the campers explore different levels of the ecosystem, including the forest floor and the canopy of leaves at the top of the forest.  After a hike through the rainforest, the campers' fun adventure culminates as each kid takes a ride on a zip line, where they all get a bird's eye view of the entire rainforest!

Educational Objective: Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet, forests that are home to a vast array of different life forms. Rainforests get a lot of rain, at least 70 inches per year. Rainforests, often called the "lungs of the Earth," generate much of the oxygen we breathe.

“Nature Trackers Adventure Camp: Canyon Hiking”

The Nature Trackers Adventure Campers are led by Mr. Conductor and Gilbert on a hike down a canyon, where they can see the different layers of the Mesozoic Era! At first Lily Lambeosaurus is reluctant to go, thinking that a new adventure sounds hard, but Don convinces her that a new adventure can be worth the effort. At the bottom of the canyon, the kids dig for fossils. Each Nature Tracker goes home with a "new" Ammonite fossil, and Lily is so glad she tried something new!

Educational Objective: Canyons are deep cuts in the earth's surface.  They are formed by erosion.  Erosion is mainly caused by the flow of rivers. It takes millions of years for canyons to become the grandiose natural landmarks they are today. The bottom rocks in canyons can date back billions of years, beyond the Mesozoic. Canyons can also be formed by a shift of the earth's tectonic plates.
