Holiday Gift Guide - Pop the Pig from Goliath Games

Pop the Pig — Pop the Pig has “popped” into the hearts of children around the world. After all, what child can resist an adorable pig who hungrily chomps so many hamburgers his belly pops? Everyone takes turns rolling the die to see how many chomps the pig will take. Push down the pig's head to eat the burger. With every pump, the pig's stomach will get bigger, bigger and bigger. But don't feed him too much, because if he pops ... you lose! It's sold at Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, Kmart, Menards, Meijer and ShopKo. Ages 4 and up; 2 to 6 players. $29.99; www.popthepig.com

My Thoughts

Pop the Pig is an interactive game with no assembly required. The concept behind the game is simple. Everyone feeds the pig until his belt pops. You do this by selecting one of the hamburgers at random. Each one has a number on the bottom. Whatever your number, that's how many times you pump the pig's chef hat. This inflates his belly. When it gets really full, the belt loop will pop open. The hamburgers are color coded. You roll a die and whatever color you get, that's the color hamburger you'll be feeding the pig.

My children loved this game from the start. It's not too complicated for preschool kids, but even my older children enjoyed playing. There's no work involved in setting it up and the instructions are easy to follow. It's also educational. It helps kids practice both color recognition and  counting. We did have a little trouble with the pump. Sometimes the younger kids had a hard time getting it to press down all the way, but not enough to take the fun out of the game.   If you're looking for a fun board game for younger kids, this is a great choice.
