Holiday Gift Guide - Flutterbye Light Up Fairy & Surprise Butterfly Diary

Flutterbye Fairies are the magical flying fairies you control with the palm of your hand! These magical creatures made their way to our world last year and this year, they're introducing the new Light Up Fairy! Her lights go brighter as you fly her. The Surprise Butterfly Diary is also new this year and my family got to be one of the first to test them out.

First, I'll tell you a little bit about the diary. This is a really neat concept. The book opens up on both ends. On one side, you have an adorable butterfly shaped notebook that you can write it with the included marker.  When you open up the other side, you're in for a big surprise. A butterfly fairy will come swooping out from inside the pages of this magical book. All you have to do is place the butterfly inside, pull the string, and she will dart out and fly over and over again. It works using a simple rubber band that gets twisted when you pull on the cord. It's amazing how far and how fast these little butterflies can travel!

My daughter just loved the diary. She uses the pages to write down her secrets and surprises her friends with the flying fairy. The toy itself is very well made, and even comes with two spare rubber bands to make certain your butterfly fairy is flying high for many days to come.

The Flutterbye Light Up Fairy is also a lot of fun, though at times hard to control. To start, you need to charge the fairy which takes around half an hour. You will need 6AA for the base in order to get her charged. Once she's ready to go, she'll fly for about fifteen minutes before she needs to be charged again. Her wings are a lot like plastic propellers and she works much like my son's helicopters, accept there is no remote control.

Actually flying the fairy was a little more challenging than I had hoped. She does look beautiful with all the flashing lights and her wings spinning around, but it's very difficult to control her. She takes off so quickly from the from the base, it's hard to get her under your hand.  Most of the times we tried, she wound up on the ceiling.  Since we have cathedral ceilings in our home, it was no easy task to get her back down.  We  had to wait for the charge to run down or for her to crash into the wall.  Despite this, my daughter still thought her flight was pretty magical. She enjoyed watching the fairy fly, even if she had minimal control.  The toy is pretty sturdy because even after multiple crash landings, it hasn't lost any pieces.
