6 Ways to Keep It Green During a Move

Written by Alyssa Howard, Moveboxer.com

“Green” and “moving” aren’t exactly two words that naturally go together in your mind, but there are still ways to spare the environment as you make the trek to your new house. Every little bit counts, they say, and this is especially true when you’re looking for ways to lessen the carbon footprint of your move.

1.     Think outside the (new) box
Many people assume that they need to buy new boxes when they move, but this isn’t the case. Finding used boxes for your relocation greatly cuts down on the amount of cardboard you’re using. Some moving companies try to require consumers to use new boxes in the interest of sturdy packing, and if this is the case for you, at least try to use boxes made from recycled materials.
2.     Get creative on packing supplies
In the same vein, you don’t need to buy all that packing paper and bubble wrap. Instead, you can use things like old towels, t-shirts or newspapers to pack breakable items. These do the trick just as well and help absorb the shock of any jostling that may occur on the moving truck.
3.     Hire eco-friendly movers
When you’re searching for a moving company, ask representatives about their business’ stance on eco-friendly practices. It would be ideal if you could hire an environmentally conscious company to help with your relocation so you know that its standard practices take into account what’s best for the environment.
4.     Use environmentally safe cleaners
Look for cleaning products that are eco-friendly online with reviews from customers. These brands are easy to find anywhere, and although they may cost just a little bit extra, they’re well worth it in the lack of environmental impact.
5.     Donate, donate, donate
Before you make an estimate of how much stuff you’re going to move to the new place, do a little soul searching. When was the last time you really wore that rhinestone-studded purple sweater? Donate the things you’re not using so someone else can give them a new home. Doing so will not only help your wallet but also cut down on the weight of the moving truck, which will reduce the fuel needed.
6.     Make conscious choices
Above all, the most important part of a green move is to just make sure you’re taking the time to think things through your decisions. Don’t abandon your recycling bin just because you’re busy with the move.
