Fame High Documentary Review

***Complimentary copy received in exchange for an honest review***

A new doumentary from Academy Award Nominee Scott Hamilton Kennedy (The Garden and OT: our town), FAME HIGH captures the in-class and at-home drama, competition, heartbreak, and triumph during one school year at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), also known as FAME HIGH. Talented teenagers reach for their dreams of becoming actors, singers, dancers, and musicians. This unique hybrid film is a coming-of-age, documentary-musical which follows a group of novice freshman and seasoned seniors struggling to find their voice - not only in their art but in life - with the help of, and sometimes in spite of, their passionate and opinionated families.

My Thoughts

If you think regular high school is tough, you haven't seen anything yet. Fame High takes competition and pressure between peers to a whole new level. This very real high school in Los Angeles is a performing arts school where you'll find singers, dancers, actors and more. What makes this documentary unique is that its like watching real life musical coming to life. There are lots of fantastic performances. These are some really talented kids at this school but not all of them are going to make it to the big time. There is heart break, arguments, and a whole lot of drama as these Freshmen struggle to find their place. Some of the kids earned some respect. Some of them I felt need to be knocked down a peg, but all in all, this a great documentary that shows you just how much work goes into becoming a star.
