***Complimentary product received in exchange for an honest review****

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Miranda Raison (Vexed, MI-5), Shaun Dooley (Red Riding), and Tom Ellis (Miranda), the lighthearted, 2011 BBC comedy Sugartown makes its U.S. debut on DVD from Acorn on April 16, 2013. The seaside hamlet of Sugartown has been kept afloat for years by the Burr candy factory, but now the company is struggling. This series pits brother against brother in a battle for a town’s soul and a woman’s heart. The DVD includes three episodes ($29.99, AcornOnline.com).

Life isn’t so sweet in Sugartown. Faced with the decision of what to do with the town’s struggling candy company, Jason Burr (Shaun Dooley) is determined to keep the factory open and his family’s legacy alive, while his posh brother, Max (Tom Ellis), returns with plans to change Sugartown forever. Max wants to shutter the factory in favor of a trendy “entertainment complex,” but he may have more than business on his mind—namely, Jason’s fiancée, Emily (Miranda Raison).

The series also stars Philip Jackson (Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Little Voice), Sue Johnston (Waking the Dead), and Georgia King (The New Normal).

My Thoughts

Sugartown is a contemporary comedy about a pair of brothers who own a struggling candy company. One of them wants to keep the family business going and the other wants to shut it down and open something a little more modern. But the business isn't the only thing they're feuding over. They also have a thing for the same girl. Lots of hilarious  fun ensues as the brothers vie for control of the company and the love of the girl. Aside from having great primary characters, even the secondary roles are fun. The hippie mayor and the old ladies at the candy factory add a whole other dimension to the show. But I think my favorite part is how they randomly break into dance sequences. There are only three episodes on this disk, but it provides 177 minutes of laughter and romantic intrigue with a fresh and quirky twist.

You can order Sugertown on DVD for only $29.99 at Acorn Media.
