Maigret Complete Collection DVD Review

Bringing the most intriguing and complex puzzles from Georges Simenon’s classic detective novels to life, Maigret Complete Collection arrives on DVD from Acorn on February 26, 2013. Broadcast on PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery ! in the early 1990s, the series stars Emmy® nominee Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) as Jules Maigret, the “wonderfully entertaining sleuth” (Austin American-Statesman), equipped with rigorous logic, uncanny judgment of character, and, of course, his signature pipe and fedora. This complete collection features a strong cast of familiar faces, including Brenda Blethyn (Vera, Pride & Prejudice), Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting), Barbara Flynn (Cranford), Jane Wymark (Midsomer Murders), Edward Petherbridge (A Dorothy L. Sayers Mystery), and Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon). The DVD 4-Disc boxed set includes all twelve episodes from Series 1 and 2, plus a bonus 8-page booklet with articles on the writer and series ($59.99, AcornOnline.com).

Inspector Maigret relishes the challenge of solving any mystery despite dangerous crimes and elusive characters from the villages of rural France to the alleyways of Montmartre. In the first series, he is prodded gently by his wife (Ciaran Madden, Fortunes of War) to consider a vacation. But there is no time to relax when a notorious jewel-heist mastermind is shot in his home, and the only suspect is his mistress. Other mysteries involve a burglar who stumbles upon a murder during a break-in, a schoolteacher at odds with an entire village, an elderly woman whose conspiracies are mistaken for lunacy, and a serial killer targeting young women in Montmartre.

The second series finds Inspector Maigret investigating a claim made by a stripper (Minnie Driver, Good Will Hunting) who overhears one of her clients plotting a murder. A string of escalating incidents hints that her suspicions may soon come true. Later in the series, Maigret must face the startling truth that even his own department cannot be trusted, as he fights wrongful charges of sexual assault and handles the recovery of a controversial government report.

 Our Thoughts

Sometimes stereotypes are fun.  Maigret is the fedora wearing, pipe smoking stereotype of a detective that you just can't help but love.  I have never read the novels which were the inspiration for the series, but after watching the show, I am going to be looking for them. Maigret dives into the world of sleuthing with both feet. There is danger and intrigue at every turn, and mysteries that, once solved, will leave you with your mouth handing open.  Even when his wife talks him into taking a vacation, he soon finds himself wrapped up in yet another mystery. From missing jewels to shady pimps, this series has something that will appeal to all mystery lovers.

If you want to take advantage a whole set of great mysteries, this is the series for you. You can order Maigret Complete Collection on DVD for only $59.99 at Acorn Media.
