Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth 25th Anniversary Edition DVD Review

Featuring newly recorded introductions from veteran Bill Moyers and more than two hours of bonus features, the seminal PBS series Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers: 25th Anniversary Edition arrives on DVD from Athena on February 5, 2013. Twenty-five years ago, renowned scholar Joseph Campbell sat down with veteran journalist Bill Moyers for a series of interviews that became one of the most enduringly popular programs ever aired on PBS. The series brought Campbell’s theories into popular culture, captivated the nation, and led to a bestselling companion book. The DVD 3-disc set includes several bonus features including Moyers initial conversations in 1981 with Campbell from Bill Moyers Journal that were the precursor to the iconic 1988 series (105 min.); expanded selections from Moyers’ interview with George Lucas, who credits Campbell with helping to inspire his creation of Star Wars (28 min.); a 12-page viewers guide; and much more (6 episodes; $59.99; AcornOnline.com). Filmed at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch and New York’s American Museum of Natural History, this series fires the imagination and the intellect.

In lively, expansive dialogues that adroitly span millennia of history and far-flung geography, Campbell and Moyers discuss myths as metaphors for human experience and the path to transcendence, touching on topics as diverse as world religion, heroic figures, and pop culture. As pivotal as ever before, the series demonstrates that, despite superficial differences between cultures, all stories are humanity’s story.

Our Thoughts

Mythology is one of my favorite subjects. We can learn so much about the people of the past and how much we really all have is common by looking at the myths of the past. In Joseph Campbell And the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers, he delves into the myths, legends and symbols of eastern and western civilization. You might think watching a lecture for hours would be boring, but I found myself glued to my seat as I ingested the knowledge Mr. Campbell had to share. He touched on all my favorite topics from world religion to heroic figures in history. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys philosophy or mythology.

If you love a good documentary as much as I do, especially one that is a mythology lesson, than this is the box set for you. You can order Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth 25th Anniversary Edition  or only $59.99 at Acorn Media.
