I asked for the Little Pim DVD, not to teach my son another language, but to assist him in learning English. He is non-verbal and will not sign (and is incredibly stubborn!), so it can be hard to judge what he knows. He loves DVD’s . . . as long as there are words on the screen, so I thought this might be a good match. Little Pim sent me the “Wake up Smiling” DVD.
Let
me tell you how our morning went: After my son’s bath, I told him I
had a new video for him to watch downstairs. Several minutes later, I
put him in the living room, figuring he’d go for his toys as always.
Instead, he walked to the TV and touched it, looked back at me, then sat
down in front of it repeatedly looking from me to the TV. I popped the
DVD in and turned it on. At first he lost interest quickly, as the
words didn’t start immediately on the screen. I scooped him into my
lap, and held him until the lessons got underway, and repeated the words
on the screen to him. When they got to the part about hugging, he got
up, turned around, and gave me a hug! This is the first time he has
EVER repeated an action shown as an imitation; don’t get me wrong, he
does imitate stuff, but never when you tell or want him to! Then when
the part about reading books came on, he got up, walked to his gigantic
pile of books and brought me one. I cannot believe this was all a
coincidence!
Onto
using the DVD’s for their original intention, learning another language –
I think they are well put together, and I like that they show the
actions along with the words and phrases. I also think they are well
geared towards children – the lessons are not too difficult, and about
things children like to do and learn.
As
my son gets older and hopefully eventually starts speaking, I think I’d
like to get a few more of these to help him learn other languages!
