THE WORLD’S MOST PRICELESS INSTRUMENTS
Debuting on Blu-ray and DVD Feb. 5
Classical musicians, like those
portrayed in A Late Quartet, often
have incredibly expensive or priceless instruments. In this feature, we will
highlight some of the world's most priceless instruments, including the
"Lady Tennant" violin and Eric Clapton's "Blackie" guitar.
Academy Award® Winners
Christopher Walken and Philip Seymour Hoffman strike all the right chords in A
Late Quartet with Academy Award® Nominee Catherine Keener and Mark Ivanir. They
provide us with a powerful story that blends raw emotion with fiery passion to
form an unforgettable cinematic masterpiece. After 25 years together, the
members of a world-renowned string quartet learn that their beloved cellist
(Walken) may soon be forced to retire. But the news stirs up equally painful
challenges when competing egos, harbored resentment, and irrepressible lust
threaten to derail the group as they struggle to maintain harmony in their
music — and their lives.
Eric Clapton's ‘Blackie’
guitar
In the 1970s, Eric Clapton bought three
different Fender Stratocasters and pieced them together to form the guitar he
named ‘Blackie’. This guitar was recently sold at auction for $959,500 and is
one of the most famous guitars in the world. It was surpassed as the most
expensive guitar however, when another Fender Stratocaster, signed by guitar
legends such as Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Ray Davis, Keith
Richards, Brian May and Ronnie Wood was sold at auction for $3.7 million to
help the victims of the Indian Ocean Tsunami.
The ‘Lady Tennant’ and
‘The Hammer’ Stradivarius violins
Antonio Stradivari, the most famous
violin maker, or luthier, created over 1000 violins before his death in 1737.
Just one of these violins, the ‘Lady Tennant’ Stradivarius, was sold at auction
for $2.03 million in 2005, making it the most expensive musical instrument in
the world. However, in 2006 another Stradivarius violin, known as ‘The Hammer’
was sold for $3.5 million to an anonymous buyer at Christies, New York. This
took the place of the ‘Lady Tennant’ as the world’s most expensive violin.
Although other violins have been put up for sale at higher prices, this violin
remains the most expensive one sold to date.
John Lennon’s Steinway piano
The Steinway Model Z piano which was
used by John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono in the video for ‘Imagine’ was sold
to George Michael for $2.08 million. Still bearing Lennon’s cigarette burns,
this was his own piano, which he used to compose and record many of his hits as
a soloist, and for the Beatles.
Keith Moon’s Drum Kit
The
Who were famous for smashing up most of their kit
after each gig, so it is a miracle that any instrument of theirs survives.
However, in 2004 five pieces of Keith Moon’s silver Premier kit were sold for a
total of $252,487 making it the most expensive drum kit ever sold. This record
is even more impressive when you think that this is only half the original kit.

I would have to say that Christopher Walken is my favorite actor in this film. He tends to take quirky parts and doesn't seem to be afraid to be anybody.
