Our Thoughts

Machine Gun Preacher tells the story of Childers. He was a drug dealer and addict, who had spent time in prison. After he thinks he kills a man, he finds finds God, with the help of his wife, and his whole world changes. He opens his own construction business, moves from his trailer to a beautiful home with his family, and becomes a pillar of the community.  He even saves one of his addict friends and brings him into his own home to live with him. After building a church for this community, he meets up with a reverend who was helping Christians in Africa and he decides he needs to go there and offer his building skills. What he finds changes his whole life. He becomes a savior for the children of Africa, offering them shelter and safety. But in a war torn world, its always a challenge. His almost loses his faith when friends die, and there are times when his family feels deserted, but through it all, he stays true to himself.

I love Gerald Butler, and was really looking forward to this movie, even though its not a genre I normally would be interested in. Gerald definitely gives an outstanding and emotional performance. I felt his turmoil as he fought his addiction and I cried with him when he cradled a dead child who had been killed by a landmine. The movie had a lot of good qualities, but it was just a little too long.  I felt I watched the same scenes over and over. My husband didn't even make it through the whole movie. He had to give up and go to bed. I made it through the rest, and I am glad that I watched it, but I think it could have been toned down a little. That being said, it is an inspirational story about he power of faith. No matter what path you follow, when you find your own calling, its an amazing thing that can lead to all sorts of revelations, and this movie is a great example of that power.
