CHRONICLE DVD Review

Take an extraordinary journey with three teens who uncover a power greater than anything they’ve ever imagined.  Up-and-coming actors Dane DeHaan (“True Blood”), Alex Russell (Almost Kings) and Michael B. Jordan (“Friday Night Lights”) star alongside Michael Kelly (The Adjustment Bureau) in the innovative action film CHRONICLE, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD May 15 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny telekinetic powers beyond their understanding.  As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control as their darker sides begin to take over.  What starts out as fun and games quickly becomes dangerous and they must face the inevitable question of whether they can handle the responsibility that comes with their remarkable powers.

Utilizing hand-held filmmaking techniques to create a realistic and exciting viewing experience, the CHRONICLE Blu-ray boast a director’s cut of the film and unseen footage that offer a deeper glimpse into the events that took place with the students.  Special features include deleted scene, camera test, pre-viz materials and more.  The film will be available as a Blu-ray combo pack with DVD and digital copy for an average retail price of $39.99 and the DVD is $29.98 respectively.  Prebook is April 4.

Our Thoughts: This movie is the story of three friends who discover a strange glowing crystal that gives them super powers.  The storyline was unique and original. It gives you a much more realistic view point of how a every day teen would react to having super powers. The young cast did a great job, and it was filled with almost mind boggling action. This movie had the potential to be great, but the way it was filmed was a real draw back, at least for me. The entire movie is made like you're watching a home movie. The characters constantly have out a video camera and record every miniscule second of their lives.  I understand the point. Its supposed to be a "Chronicle" of their experiences. But they could have pulled this off without showing it to us from the point of view of the film taker. I found that this limited the possibilities of the movie. Great action scenes are cut off  when the camera falls or gets broken. Or you just see clouds or clothes flapping in the wind, when you'd really rather see the expressions on the character's faces.  Making things even less realistic, Matt's love interest also constantly has a video camera, supposedly for her blog. This feels very forced. Like a last ditch effort to make the relationship possible because they couldn't figure out a way to get Andrew to take his camera into the bedroom with them. The climax of the film would have been absolutely amazing if filmed normally. But when you're jumping from street surveillance cameras to random pedestrians recording the scene, it actually makes you feel a little dizzy.    I really think they could have gotten the video taping point across without actually showing it from that point of view, and it would have made this a much better movie. Its worth a watch, but its not one of those films you'll want to watch over and over.

If you would like to get a copy of Chronicle for your family, the DVD is available on Amazon for only $14.96 and the Blu-ray can be purchased for $24.96.
