“Our School Needs” Contest!
With the way things has been going with the economy, it was just a matter of time before our schools were going to start to suffer. Just a few minutes ago they were saying on the news that the lay off rate for teachers is reaching new highs. That means we are in for overcrowded classrooms where kids won't be able to get the attention they need. But even the little things are being effected. This year was my daughter's first year to join the music program. My husband had already started teaching her to play the clarinet but she is so excited to be playing with a group. Band used to be an after school extracurricular activity. But due to cost cuts, they can no longer provide the additional bus transportation to take the kids home after practice. So, in order to be in the band, my daughter has to practice at recess. While I am grateful that the school is still able to offer the program at all, I don't think nine and ten year old children should have to choose between recess and music. Both should be an important part of their lives.
I'm sure most of you have a similar story. What programs have been cut at your school? Do you have enough books? Are field trips a thing of the past? Do they offer art and music? Do you have a child with special needs who isn't getting the care they deserve? I know the teachers at my childrens' schools are doing everything they can to work with their small budgets. As parents, we need to do what we can to help. Every little thing counts, like volunteering as a teacher's aid or couch. But now there is something else you can do. You can check out the "Our School Needs" Contest, sponsored by BING.
