DVD Review: Britain’s Bloody Crown

The fascinating, action-packed historical documentary, Britain’s Bloody Crown, makes its DVD debut on December 13, 2016 from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. Presented by award-winning journalist and acclaimed historian Dan Jones (Britain’s Bloodiest Dynasty), this four-part documentary reveals the true history of the Wars of the Roses like never before. Scripted reenactments combine with Jones’s unique storytelling to bring to life a tale of human frailties, rivalries, forced hands, and sheer luck that changed Britain and the monarchy forever. This 2-disc DVD set features 4 episodes ($39.99, AcornOnline.com). Britain’s Bloody Crown made its U.S. premiere in October 2016 on Acorn TV, the premier streaming service for world-class television from Britain and beyond.

Nearly 600 years ago, England was ripped asunder by a series of bloody battles for the throne. The Wars of the Roses, as the conflicts became known, were fought between the rival houses of Lancaster and York as they contended for supremacy. Over the course of three decades, the crown changed hands seven times, and thousands of people were slaughtered. It was one of the most turbulent and violent periods in British history.

In discussing the series with the Daily Mail, Dan Jones said, “Just like Game of Thrones, I wanted to deliver sharp and punchy storytelling, focusing intensely on human relationships to explain high politics. Above everything else, I want (my) shows to demonstrate my belief that history – when well told – beats the pants off any work of fiction.”

Historian and journalist Dan Jones studied under David Starkey at Cambridge and has written several bestselling histories about the English medieval period, including The Plantagenets and The Wars of the Roses.

Episodes: The Mad King, The Kingmaker Must Die, The Princes Must Die, A Mother’s Love.

My Thoughts

Watching this documentary is as exciting as watching an action film. Its even more exciting because it's all true! This series is an amazing tale of past monarchs, when wars were raged and real knights fought.  This DVD set includes two DVDs with four episodes.

The Mad King - In this episode we delve into Henry IVI Would his insanity have been the cause of the Wars of the Roses?

The Kingmaker Must Die - Edward IV struggles to keep the man who helped him earn the crown in power beside him.

The Princess Must Die -We follow Richard III, one of the most despised monarchs, on the path to this destruction.

A Mother's Love - Margaret Beaufort manages to overthrow Richard III and get her own son on the thrown, bringing the famous Tudors into power.

I really enjoyed this documentary. The reenactments were great, and its a fantastic look at the time period that kept me riveted. If you'd like to grab a copy of this fantastic documentary, you can find it online at Amazon and Acorn Media.
